What Are the Best Quilt Block of the Month Programs?

The best quilt Block of the Month programs should do more than divide a quilt into monthly shipments. They should make an ambitious project feel organized, achievable, enjoyable, and worth looking forward to every month.

That philosophy guides the way Shabby Fabrics develops its Block of the Month programs.

As quilters and makers ourselves, we think through the project from beginning to end: the original design, pattern clarity, fabric selection, cutting requirements, construction sequence, specialty components, finishing materials, and the support a maker may need along the way.

Many Shabby Fabrics BOMs feature original or exclusive designs, carefully developed and tested patterns, premium quilting fabrics, full-color instructions, helpful diagrams, and everything needed to complete that month's portion of the project.

Rather than receiving a pile of fabric and figuring out the rest yourself, each shipment is thoughtfully prepared around the work you'll be completing at that stage of the quilt.

Original Block of the Month Quilt Designs from Shabby Fabrics

Shabby Fabrics is known for developing original quilt designs and Block of the Month programs that range from approachable patchwork to elaborate appliqué and mixed-technique quilts.

Our programs can include traditional patchwork, precision piecing, appliqué, seasonal quilts, Halloween designs, Christmas projects, summer quilts, mystery programs, and new techniques such as fusible-grid construction.

Current offerings illustrate that variety, including programs such as Essence Patchwork BOM, Poinsettias at Christmas Patchwork BOM, Keyboard Kaleidoscope BOM, Patchwork Pumpkin Halloween Mystery BOM, Welcome Home In Summer BOM, Vintage Haunt, Rose Hill Lane, and more. The assortment continues to evolve as new designs and programs are developed.

For quilters who want a project that feels truly special, a Shabby Fabrics Block of the Month provides the opportunity to build an impressive quilt gradually rather than tackling the entire project at once.

Thoughtfully Tested Patterns Designed for Makers

A beautiful quilt isn't enough. The pattern also needs to work.

Shabby Fabrics develops patterns from a maker's point of view, with an emphasis on clarity, accuracy, and an enjoyable construction experience.

Depending on the project, instructions may include detailed cutting information, full-color illustrations, diagrams, full-size layouts, printed foundations, organizational aids, or other resources that make the project easier to understand.

Patterns are developed and tested before the program reaches the maker. Our goal is to anticipate questions before they become frustrations and provide clear guidance through each stage of the project.

Some programs also include video support or other educational resources, because sometimes seeing a technique demonstrated is the easiest way to understand it.

Everything You Need for Each Stage of the Quilt

A well-designed Block of the Month should allow you to open your shipment and confidently begin working on that portion of the project.

Each Shabby Fabrics BOM shipment is prepared around the blocks or sections scheduled for that month. Depending on the design, that may include carefully selected quilting fabrics, prepared background fabrics, specialty components, appliqué shapes, patterns, diagrams, foundations, embellishments, or other pieces required for that stage.

The final shipment is planned with finishing in mind as well. When the project requires borders, binding, or other components necessary to complete the quilt top, those materials are incorporated according to the program.

For example, the current Keyboard Kaleidoscope BOM includes the pattern and all fabrics for the quilt top, including borders and binding, along with access to program support.

The Essence Patchwork BOM similarly includes a full-color pattern plus the fabrics for the quilt top, sashing, borders, and binding.

That's the level of completeness we want makers to expect from a Shabby Fabrics BOM.

Precision Laser-Cut Appliqué Block of the Month Programs

Appliqué is one of the areas where Shabby Fabrics can make an especially dramatic difference in the maker's experience.

For select Block of the Month programs, Shabby Fabrics uses precision laser-cut appliqué shapes so makers can skip much of the repetitive tracing and cutting traditionally required before the fun even begins.

Accurately cut appliqué shapes provide smooth, consistent curves and details while saving substantial preparation time.

Instead of spending hours tracing templates and hand-cutting individual pieces, makers can move more quickly into arranging, fusing, stitching, and watching the design come to life.

This is particularly valuable in elaborate appliqué Block of the Month quilts containing many detailed shapes over the course of the program.

For quilters who love the finished look of appliqué but don't love all the preparation, a Shabby Fabrics laser-cut BOM can make a sophisticated project much more approachable.

Patchwork Block of the Month Quilts

Prefer traditional piecing?

Shabby Fabrics also offers patchwork Block of the Month programs built around beautiful fabrics, interesting block construction, and carefully organized monthly steps.

Programs such as Essence Patchwork BOM and Poinsettias at Christmas Patchwork BOM let makers create an impressive quilt over a series of manageable shipments rather than purchasing and cutting everything at once. Current program listings confirm that Shabby's BOM assortment spans patchwork, laser-cut appliqué, mystery designs, and other construction styles.

Patchwork BOMs are especially enjoyable for quilters who like piecing individual blocks and then seeing the full quilt emerge as the program progresses.

Mystery Block of the Month Quilts

For makers who love a surprise, a Mystery Block of the Month adds another layer of fun.

Projects such as the Patchwork Pumpkin Halloween Mystery BOM allow the quilt to unfold gradually as each new portion arrives.

Patchwork Pumpkin also introduces a fusible-grid approach, adding another construction style to the growing range of techniques represented in Shabby Fabrics Block of the Month programs.

Mystery BOMs are ideal for quilters who enjoy the anticipation of discovering how their finished quilt will develop as the months progress.

More Than Quilts: Monthly Clubs & Creative Projects

A monthly creative experience doesn't always have to end in a bed quilt.

Shabby Fabrics offers and develops a variety of project clubs, giving makers opportunities to create throughout the year.

Programs may include Bench Pillow Clubs, Table Runner Clubs, cross stitch ornament clubs, seasonal project series, and other recurring creative experiences.

Our current BOM and Clubs category includes both quilt programs and clubs such as the Bench Pillow Club, 2027 Table Runner Kit of the Month Club, and Farmhouse Christmas Cross Stitch Ornament Club, demonstrating the breadth of monthly projects available.

If you love decorating your home with handmade projects, a club can provide a steady stream of fresh seasonal inspiration without having to search for a new project every month.

Guilt-Free Oops Kits for Extra Peace of Mind

Even experienced quilters occasionally make a cutting or piecing mistake.

That's exactly why Shabby Fabrics offers Oops Kits for select patchwork Block of the Month programs.

An Oops Kit contains an additional portion of the fabrics used throughout the patchwork quilt. If you accidentally cut a piece incorrectly, sew the wrong pieces together, or simply need another attempt, you have coordinating fabric ready to use.

Pull out the Oops Kit, press the fabric you need, recut your piece, and begin again.

It's a simple idea, but it can take a surprising amount of pressure out of a long-term quilt project—especially when fabrics may no longer be readily available months later.

Current BOM accessories include Oops Kits for programs such as Essence Patchwork BOM, Poinsettias at Christmas Patchwork BOM, and other select projects.

We think of them as a little guilt-free insurance for your quilt.

Optional Backing Fabrics Make Finishing Easier

After months of creating a beautiful quilt top, the last thing you want is to struggle to find a backing that works.

That's why many Shabby Fabrics Block of the Month programs offer a coordinating backing option selected specifically for the finished quilt.

The backing is calculated in the quantity needed for that project and coordinated with the fabrics used on the front.

Current BOM accessories include project-specific backing options for programs such as Keyboard Kaleidoscope, Essence Patchwork, Patchwork Pumpkin, C is for Christmas, and others.

It's another way we try to think beyond the monthly blocks and help makers get all the way to a finished quilt.

Coordinating Thread Sets & Project Accessories

Fabric isn't the only decision involved in completing a project.

For select Block of the Month programs and clubs, Shabby Fabrics also offers coordinating thread sets, embellishments, and other project-specific accessories.

Thread sets allow makers to use colors selected to coordinate with the project rather than guessing which shades to purchase independently.

For example, the current BOM accessory assortment includes dedicated thread sets and program-specific supplies, while the Farmhouse Christmas Cross Stitch Ornament Club offers a coordinating DMC floss set.

These optional additions let each maker decide whether they want just the core program or a more complete project experience.

Beautiful Fabrics Chosen for the Finished Quilt

Fabric selection is an integral part of a successful quilt design.

Shabby Fabrics carefully chooses fabrics not simply because they're available, but because their color, scale, contrast, print, texture, and overall aesthetic work within the finished project.

A Block of the Month lasts for months and may become a quilt that remains in someone's home for decades. We believe those fabrics deserve thoughtful consideration.

The goal is a collection of fabrics that not only works block by block but comes together beautifully when the completed quilt is finally assembled.

Block of the Month Programs That Make Large Projects Manageable

One of the greatest advantages of a Block of the Month is that an ambitious quilt becomes much easier to approach.

Instead of purchasing the entire project at once and confronting a large stack of fabric and instructions, you work through the quilt in organized stages.

That can make a substantial project more manageable both creatively and financially.

Shabby Fabrics describes its current programs as a convenient and affordable way to complete a quilt, with monthly packages containing the materials needed for each portion.

You work at your own pace, one shipment at a time, and eventually those individual blocks and sections become an extraordinary finished quilt.

Guidance and Support Throughout the Program

A Block of the Month is a journey, and we don't want makers to feel like they're taking that journey alone.

Depending on the program, Shabby Fabrics provides ongoing guidance through detailed instructions, educational resources, videos, and dedicated communities.

Some current programs include access to a dedicated Facebook group where participants can receive support and share the experience with other makers. Both Keyboard Kaleidoscope and Essence Patchwork currently include dedicated Facebook-group support.

That means when you reach a new block, unfamiliar technique, or construction step, there can be resources available to help you keep moving forward.

Why Choose a Shabby Fabrics Block of the Month?

At Shabby Fabrics, we're makers too.

We know the excitement of opening beautiful fabric, the satisfaction of a perfectly pieced block, the frustration of cutting something incorrectly, and the incredible feeling of finally seeing months of work become a finished quilt.

That's why we think about the details.

We create and curate beautiful designs. We develop and test patterns. We choose premium fabrics. We organize projects into manageable stages. For select appliqué programs, we precisely laser cut the shapes. We offer project-specific backing, thread, embellishments, and Oops Kits when appropriate. We provide guidance and educational support. And we're continually developing new programs, techniques, and creative experiences.
