Quilting Fabrics By Design

Navigating quilt store fabric selections has never been easy. There were many different styles of dots, stripes, plaids, and florals, and it was difficult to see the store's full collection of fabric designs, much less choose between two or three fabric types with similar patterns or color schemes. Thankfully, that's no longer the case! Now you can sort Shabby Fabrics' extensive selection of quilting fabrics by design. Whether you're seeking batiks, finding flannels, or needing a nice novelty print, there are scores of options to choose from.

Quilting Fabric By Design

Each design you include in your quilt adds a new dimension to your project. By mixing variable textures with complementary colors, you'll add depth and visual interest to your quilt. Do you have a design in mind already? Go ahead and click on the categories above to find more versions of that fabric pattern! If you're new to designing, take a look at our premium quilt patterns and free downloads. The patterns will give you ideas on what fabrics to choose for that region of the block or quilt. Find a similar fabric design and replace it! You can substitute a stripe fabric for a plaid, or a polka-dotted fabric for a ditsy style. This maintains the look and balance of the pattern while embracing your unique style!

Are you a newcomer to quilting? Here's a rundown of your basic fabric types.

Cotton is the classic quilting staple. It's easy for beginners to work with and is the preferred medium of many advanced quilters for its versatility and range of styles. Most of our cotton fabric has designs that are printed directly onto the fabric, although you can also find woven cottons. Our cotton fabrics are quilt grade. They are created by top manufacturers, and are designed by fabric collection artists who know exactly what quilters are looking for. Each fabric has bright, colorfast colors; a high thread count; a smooth finish; and is much less likely to tear or fray than a low-quality fabric. When it comes to quilting, a top-grade fabric is well worth the investment! All our Shabby Fabrics Original laser-cut fusible appliqué kits are made from high grade quilting cotton.

Flannel is thicker and softer than cotton. The texture is reminiscent of that beloved plaid shirt hiding deep in your closet. It's also durable. Our Crib QuiltSelf-Binding Receiving Blanket, and Ultimate Toddler Bib are all made from the Maywood Studio Lil' Sprout Flannel collection, which is perfectly soft! These projects are perfect for beginner quilters who want to try out flannel fabrics.

Batik is a specialty fabric. Designs in wax are hand painted by artisans onto cotton or other natural fabrics. The fabrics are then dyed in various colors. The wax protects the color underneath, much like a clear crayon on an Easter egg. The fabric can then be dyed in many patterns and shades, leading to incredible effects! Due to the nature of the process, variations in color and pattern are to be expected, and are considered part of the natural beauty of the fabric. For those hoping to try batik for the first time, we recommend one of our batik precuts. Available in fat quarter sets, strip packs, and sometimes charm packs and layer cakes, precut sets allow you to collect many unique batik fabrics for an affordable price.
