Frequently Asked Questions About Flannel Fabric

Are flannel and plaid the same?
While flannel is a soft fabric with a fuzzy texture, plaid refers only to the pattern woven or printed on the fabric. There are many types of plaids with names of their own, though the use of plaid on long-sleeved shirts has become synonymous with the term "flannel" since the height of its popularity  in the 1990's.

Do you sell flannel fabric strips?
While not every collection offers precuts, many of our flannel collections include 2-1/2” Strips or Jelly Rolls.

How big is a fabric panel?
A typical fabric panel ranges anywhere from 24” x WOF (width of fabric) to 40” x WOF. The size depends mainly on the design printed on the fabric and whether it’s meant to be used as a single piece, or as individual blocks cut from a single design.

How do I quilt with a panel?

Panels are generally meant to be used in one of two ways: as a single large piece that forms the centerpiece of a quilt or wall hanging, or cut apart into blocks and sewn into a quilt alongside pieced blocks. Both methods produce beautiful results and some quilters have even fussy cut panels into unique applique pieces that accent their quilts.

What are the benefits of using panels?
Using a panel in a quilt has the benefit of making a project come together quickly and removes some of the difficulty of piecing, which is especially handy for beginners who are still learning the fundamentals of quilting.

What is a fabric panel?
A fabric panel is a large design meant to be used as one piece at the center of a quilt or cut into blocks and used in place of traditional piecing.

What is flannel made of?
Almost all of the flannel fabrics at Shabby Fabrics are 100% Cotton. However, flannel is thicker and softer than typical quilting cotton. What makes flannel different from typical quilting cotton fabric is the method of brushing the fibers that results in a different texture.
The texture is reminiscent of that beloved plaid shirt hiding deep in your closet. It's quite durable, making it a great choice for blankets or clothing items that will see a lot of use.
