Layer Cakes & 10-Inch Precut Fabric Squares

What Is a Layer Cake?

A Layer Cake is a coordinated bundle of 10" × 10" precut fabric squares.

Moda Fabrics coined and popularized the Layer Cake name, but many other fabric manufacturers offer the same basic 10-inch-square precut format under different names.

A Layer Cake gives you a beautiful sampling of fabrics from a collection without requiring you to purchase yardage of every individual print.

And because the squares are a generous 10 inches, they're large enough to make a significant impact in a quilt.

What Size Is a Layer Cake Square?

A Layer Cake square measures:

10" × 10"

That's one of the largest standard square precuts commonly used in quilting.

The generous size gives you plenty of flexibility.

You can leave the squares nearly whole for a fast and simple patchwork quilt, or subcut them into smaller squares, rectangles, triangles, half-square triangles, and other patchwork units.

That's one reason Layer Cakes are loved by both beginning and experienced quilters.

How Many Squares Are in a Layer Cake?

Many Layer Cakes contain approximately 42 squares, but the exact number varies by manufacturer and fabric collection.

A collection doesn't necessarily contain 42 different fabrics.

When there are fewer individual prints than the number of pieces included in the precut, you may receive duplicates of selected fabrics.

Likewise, not every fabric from a collection necessarily belongs in a 10-inch-square precut.

Panels and other specialty fabrics may be excluded, and border stripes may also be omitted when their designs don't translate appropriately to a 10" square.

Always check the individual product description for the exact number of squares included.

Why Do Quilters Love Layer Cakes?

Layer Cakes hit a wonderful sweet spot between convenience, variety, and usable fabric size.

You get a coordinated sampling of a fabric collection, but each piece is large enough to give you considerable creative freedom.

Layer Cakes are wonderful for:

  • Patchwork quilts

  • Quick quilts

  • Large-square quilts

  • Half-square triangles

  • Quarter-square triangles

  • Geometric quilts

  • Baby quilts

  • Throw quilts

  • Table runners

  • Wall hangings

  • Bags

  • Pillows

  • Home décor

  • Seasonal sewing projects

And because the fabrics are already coordinated, much of the color and print selection has been done for you.

Make a Quilt Quickly with 10-Inch Squares

One of the simplest ways to appreciate a Layer Cake is to imagine sewing the squares together with very little additional cutting.

They're already 10 inches square.

Arrange those large squares into rows, sew them together, and your quilt top can grow remarkably quickly.

That's especially appealing to beginners, quilters looking for a faster project, or anyone who wants to showcase beautiful fabrics without cutting them into tiny pieces.

Large-scale prints can also retain more of their original design because you're working with a generous square rather than chopping the fabric into very small units.

Layer Cakes Are Excellent for Patchwork

Of course, you don't have to leave the squares whole.

A 10" × 10" square provides plenty of room for subcutting.

Depending on your pattern, Layer Cake squares can be transformed into:

  • Smaller squares

  • Rectangles

  • Triangles

  • Half-square triangles

  • Quarter-square triangles

  • Geometric units

  • Block components

  • Appliqué pieces

  • Accent pieces

That makes the Layer Cake much more than a stack of large squares.

It's really a coordinated collection of versatile fabric pieces ready to become whatever your pattern requires.

A Beautiful Sampling of a Fabric Collection

One of the greatest pleasures of buying a Layer Cake is getting to experience so many fabrics from a collection at once.

Instead of choosing only two or three prints, you may receive an assortment representing much of the collection.

Florals can sit beside coordinates.

Feature prints can mingle with smaller-scale designs.

Lights, mediums, and darks can work together.

And because the manufacturer or designer created the collection to coordinate, those fabrics naturally belong together.

For quilters who fall in love with an entire collection, a Layer Cake is a wonderful way to bring many of those fabrics into one project.

Why Aren't Panels and Border Stripes Always Included?

Not every fabric design works as a 10-inch square.

A panel, for example, is designed around a larger printed image or series of motifs. Cutting it into arbitrary 10" squares could destroy the intended design.

Border stripes can present a similar problem because their artwork is designed to run continuously across the width or length of the fabric.

Manufacturers may therefore omit panels, border stripes, or other specialty prints from a Layer Cake even when those fabrics are technically part of the larger collection.

This is another reason the number of different fabrics in a Layer Cake may not exactly match the number of SKUs in the complete fabric collection.

Layer Cakes Have Different Names Depending on the Manufacturer

Like many quilting precuts, 10-inch fabric squares don't have one universal product name.

You may see terminology such as:

  • Moda Fabrics – Layer Cakes

  • Riley Blake Designs – 10" Stackers

  • Wilmington Prints – 10 Karat Gems or 10 Karat Crystals

  • Marcus Fabrics – 10" Stacks

  • FreeSpirit Fabrics – 10" Squares

  • Other manufacturers – 10" Squares or 10-Inch Squares

You may occasionally encounter other variations on these names as manufacturers package and market their precuts differently.

Whatever the package calls them, the key characteristic is the same:

Precut fabric squares measuring approximately 10" × 10".

Always verify the piece count and specifications on the individual product because these can vary by manufacturer and collection.

What Is a Riley Blake 10-Inch Stacker?

10" Stacker is Riley Blake Designs' terminology for its 10-inch-square precut fabric bundles.

They serve the same fundamental purpose as a Moda Layer Cake: giving quilters coordinated 10" squares from a fabric collection.

So when a pattern calls for a Layer Cake, a Riley Blake 10" Stacker may provide the same basic precut size.

Just be sure the number of squares included meets the requirements of your pattern.

What Are Wilmington 10 Karat Gems and 10 Karat Crystals?

Wilmington Prints uses names including 10 Karat Gems and 10 Karat Crystals for select 10-inch-square precut fabric assortments.

The terminology can vary between collections, but these products belong to the same general family of 10" × 10" precuts.

When comparing any manufacturer's precut with a Layer Cake-friendly pattern, focus on the square dimensions and required piece count, not simply the marketing name printed on the package.

Layer Cake-Friendly Quilt Patterns

Have a stack of 10-inch squares and need a project?

Whether your package says Layer Cake, 10" Stacker, 10 Karat Gems, 10 Karat Crystals, 10" Stack, or simply 10" Squares, explore Shabby Fabrics' collection of Layer Cake Friendly Quilt Patterns.

These patterns are designed to make creative use of the 10-inch-square precut format.

Depending on the design, your pattern may call for one or more Layer Cakes plus additional background, border, binding, or backing fabric.

Always compare the number of squares required by your pattern with the number included in your particular precut bundle.

Are Layer Cakes Good for Beginning Quilters?

Yes.

Layer Cakes can be particularly approachable for beginners because the fabric selection is already coordinated and the squares arrive precut to a generous size.

A beginning quilter can choose a simple design that leaves the squares large and focus on foundational quilting skills such as:

  • Accurate seam allowances

  • Arranging fabrics and colors

  • Pinning

  • Chain piecing

  • Pressing

  • Matching seams

  • Assembling rows

  • Constructing a quilt top

As your skills grow, those same 10-inch squares can be subcut into more sophisticated patchwork units.

Layer Cakes for Half-Square Triangles

Ten-inch squares provide excellent raw material for larger half-square triangles and other geometric units.

Pairing, marking, sewing, and cutting squares can quickly transform a Layer Cake into dynamic patchwork.

Because the fabrics within the precut already coordinate, you can create considerable visual variety while maintaining a cohesive palette.

Always follow the cutting and trimming instructions in your specific pattern, since finished unit sizes depend on the construction method being used.

Layer Cakes vs. Charm Packs

Charm Packs contain approximately:

5" × 5" squares

Layer Cakes contain:

10" × 10" squares

A Layer Cake square is twice as wide and twice as tall as a Charm Pack square, which means it contains four times the fabric area.

Charm Packs are wonderful for smaller patchwork pieces.

Layer Cakes give you considerably more flexibility and allow you to create larger-scale designs or subcut the squares in many different ways.

Layer Cakes vs. Mini Charm Packs

Mini Charm Packs contain approximately:

2½" × 2½" squares

Layer Cakes contain:

10" × 10" squares

Mini Charms are designed for tiny patchwork and small projects.

Layer Cakes are much larger and provide substantial flexibility for full-size quilts and larger block components.

Layer Cakes vs. Jelly Rolls

Jelly Rolls contain approximately:

2½" × width-of-fabric strips

Layer Cakes contain:

10" × 10" squares

Jelly Rolls are particularly well suited to strip piecing.

Layer Cakes are ideal when you want a larger square that can either remain whole or be subcut into many different patchwork shapes.

Layer Cakes vs. Fat Quarter Bundles

Fat Quarter Bundles contain pieces measuring approximately:

18" × 21"

Layer Cakes contain:

10" × 10" squares

Fat Quarters provide considerably more fabric from each individual print and maximum freedom in deciding how to cut it.

Layer Cakes provide a larger number of ready-to-use standardized squares, saving cutting time when your pattern is designed around the 10-inch format.

Layer Cakes vs. Fat Eighth Bundles

Fat Eighth Bundles contain pieces measuring approximately:

9" × 21"

Layer Cakes contain:

10" × 10" squares

Fat Eighths give you a rectangular piece that can be cut according to the needs of your pattern.

Layer Cakes give you standardized squares that are ready for designs built around 10-inch precuts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Layer Cakes

What size are Layer Cake squares?

Does a Layer Cake contain every fabric in a collection?

Are 10-inch squares the same as Layer Cakes?

They are the same basic precut format. “Layer Cake” is a manufacturer-associated product name, while 10-inch squaresis the generic description.

Are Riley Blake 10" Stackers the same as Layer Cakes?

They use the same basic 10" × 10" precut format. Riley Blake Designs calls its version a 10" Stacker. Piece counts can vary, so check your pattern requirements.

What can I make with a Layer Cake?
