What Is a Jelly Roll Rug?

A Jelly Roll Rug is a handmade fabric rug created using 2½" precut fabric strips and narrow cotton batting. The fabric strips are folded around the batting and stitched to create padded fabric strips, which are then joined together to form a beautiful, durable rug.

Jelly Roll Rugs are a wonderful way to showcase coordinating quilting fabrics while creating something practical for your home. These colorful fabric rugs make charming accents for kitchens, bedrooms and sewing rooms, and they also make thoughtful handmade gifts.

What Supplies Do You Need to Make a Jelly Roll Rug?

Making a Jelly Roll Rug starts with a few essential supplies:

  • Jelly Roll Fabric Strips: Most standard Jelly Roll Rug patterns use approximately 40 coordinating strips measuring 2½" wide by the width of the fabric. Shop Jelly Rolls.

  • Jelly Roll Rug Pattern: Provides instructions for preparing your strips, assembling the fabric-covered batting and constructing your rug.

  • Bosal Katahdin Cotton Batting: Specialty 2½"-wide cotton batting strips provide structure and padding. A standard Jelly Roll Rug typically requires 50 yards of batting.

  • Sewing Machine and Thread: A sewing machine with a zigzag stitch, quality thread and an appropriate sewing machine needle.

  • Basic Sewing Notions: Fabric clips, scissors and other sewing tools help manage the fabric strips during construction.

Choosing Fabrics for Your Jelly Roll Rug

One of the most enjoyable parts of making a Jelly Roll Rug is choosing your fabric collection. Jelly Rolls feature coordinating 2½" precut fabric strips, making it easy to create beautiful color combinations without selecting and cutting every fabric individually.

Choose soft neutrals for a subtle, timeless rug, bright prints for a cheerful accent, or seasonal fabrics for a festive addition to your home. The variety of colors and patterns creates a beautiful striped appearance as the fabric-covered batting is sewn together.

Bosal Katahdin Batting: 25-Yard and 50-Yard Rolls

Bosal Katahdin 100% Cotton Batting is a popular choice for Jelly Roll Rugs because its 2½" width coordinates with standard Jelly Roll fabric strips.

For a standard Jelly Roll Rug requiring 50 yards of batting, you can purchase one 50-yard roll or two 25-yard rolls. The batting provides padding and structure while allowing the fabric strips to be sewn into a finished rug.

Always check the requirements of your specific Jelly Roll Rug Pattern, as batting quantities may vary depending on the rug's size and shape.
