Effie's Woods Quilting Cuddle by Deb Strain

Effie's Woods Quilting Cuddle by Deb Strain

Welcome to Effie's Woods, a gentle woodland filled with some of nature's sweetest little creatures.

Designed by artist Deb Strain for Moda Fabrics, this charming collection features fawns, foxes, owls and hedgehogs surrounded by mushrooms, leaves and woodland details in a wonderfully calming palette.

But Effie's Woods has something else that makes it particularly special.

These designs are printed on Quilting Cuddle®, giving Deb's detailed woodland artwork an irresistibly soft, plush surface that you can actually use for piecing and quilting.

Hand-Painted Artwork by Deb Strain

There's a wonderful story behind the artwork you see in Effie's Woods.

Deb Strain draws and paints her fabric designs by hand.

Her original artwork ultimately becomes the fabric quilters know through her collections for Moda Fabrics.

That hand-created beginning is especially fitting for Effie's Woods.

Look closely at the gentle woodland animals, delicate leaves, tiny mushrooms and other details and you can appreciate the illustrated, storybook quality of Deb's artwork.

It's more than a cute animal collection. It begins with the work of an artist.

Meet the Animals of Effie's Woods

Effie's Woods is populated by an adorable group of woodland friends.

Look for:

  • gentle fawns

  • playful foxes

  • sweet hedgehogs

  • charming owls

  • mushrooms

  • leaves

  • woodland foliage

  • coordinating nature-inspired designs

Together they create a peaceful forest story that feels especially at home in quilts and sewing projects for babies and children.

The animal motifs are sweet without feeling overly juvenile, making Effie's Woods just as lovely for anyone who simply loves woodland animals and nature.

A Soft Woodland Color Palette

The colors in Effie's Woods reinforce the peaceful feeling of the artwork.

Soft Cloud, Mint and Sky backgrounds give the collection a quiet, natural appearance rather than relying on very bright primary colors.

Gentle greens and blues pair beautifully with the neutral shades found throughout the woodland animals and foliage.

That makes Effie's Woods especially appealing for:

  • baby quilts

  • nursery décor

  • blankets

  • children's quilts

  • soft woodland-themed rooms

  • nature-inspired sewing projects

The understated palette also allows the detailed animals to remain the focus.

What Is Quilting Cuddle®?

Effie's Woods isn't printed on ordinary quilting cotton.

It's printed on Quilting Cuddle®, a special low-pile minky fabric developed by Shannon Fabrics with quilters in mind.

Quilting Cuddle® has an approximately 1.5 mm pile, minimal stretch, and a width of approximately 45 inches.

Those characteristics make it much more practical for cutting, piecing and quilting than many traditional higher-pile minky fabrics.

So instead of reserving plush fabric only for the back of your quilt, you can bring that softness right into the pieced quilt top.

Learn much more about Quilting Cuddle®, traditional minky, Cuddle® 3, Luxe Cuddle® and the differences between them on our Minky & Cuddle® Fabric page.

Moda Artwork Meets Quilting Cuddle®

Effie's Woods is part of an exciting development in quilting fabric: Moda designer artwork printed on Quilting Cuddle®.

That means quilters can enjoy recognizable artwork from Moda designers with the plush softness of Cuddle® fabric.

For Effie's Woods, the combination is especially charming.

Deb Strain's gentle woodland artwork already suggests warmth, nature and comfort. Printing those designs on soft Quilting Cuddle® adds a tactile quality that feels perfectly suited to the collection.

Make a Plush Patchwork Quilt

Because Quilting Cuddle® was developed with minimal stretch and a low pile, Effie's Woods can do something many quilters may not immediately expect from minky:

You can piece with it.

Cut the coordinating prints into patchwork and create a plush quilt top rather than using Cuddle® only as backing.

The collection's woodland motifs and coordinating designs give you opportunities to alternate focal prints with quieter fabrics throughout your quilt.

The result can be a quilt that's wonderfully soft on the outside as well as warm and cozy to snuggle under.

Effie's Woods Quilting Cuddle Panel

Effie's Woods includes a coordinating Quilting Cuddle® panel.

Panels are particularly useful when you want to preserve larger artwork rather than cutting every design into small patchwork pieces.

Use the Effie's Woods panel as:

  • the center of a baby quilt

  • a focal section in a larger quilt

  • a soft wall hanging

  • part of a blanket

  • a nursery project

  • the starting point for your own woodland design

Surround the panel with coordinating Effie's Woods prints to carry the woodland story throughout your project.

Effie's Woods Quilting Cuddle Fat Quarters

Want the whole woodland story?

The coordinated Effie's Woods Quilting Cuddle Fat Quarter Bundle + Panel brings together the collection's prints along with its focal panel.

Fat Quarters give you a convenient way to work with multiple coordinating designs without selecting each fabric individually.

They're particularly useful for patchwork, where variety is part of what makes the finished quilt interesting.

Baby Quilts & Nursery Projects

Effie's Woods feels almost made for a nursery.

The combination of plush fabric, sweet woodland animals and gentle colors creates a natural starting point for baby and children's sewing.

Use Effie's Woods for:

  • baby quilts

  • crib quilts

  • cuddle blankets

  • nursery décor

  • soft pillows

  • children's quilts

  • plush patchwork

  • handmade baby gifts

The softness of Quilting Cuddle® adds another sensory dimension that ordinary printed quilting cotton doesn't provide.

Can You Make an Entire Quilt with Quilting Cuddle®?

Yes.

That's one of the most interesting things about this fabric.

Quilting Cuddle® was specifically developed so it can be used for pieced quilt tops, not simply as plush backing.

With coordinating Effie's Woods prints available together, you can create a quilt top using the collection itself and enjoy the soft Cuddle® surface throughout the project.

If you've always thought of minky as something that belongs only on the back of a quilt, Effie's Woods is a wonderful collection for discovering another way to use it.
