Jane Austen Fabric Inspired by Her Life at Home

Jane Austen at Home was the original Jane Austen’s House fabric collection from Riley Blake Designs, first released in August 2020. The collection draws inspiration not simply from Austen’s novels, but from objects, textiles, letters, and music connected directly to her life.

Jane Austen’s House is located in Chawton, Hampshire, England, where Austen lived during the final years of her life and wrote or revised her published novels. Today the house preserves important objects associated with Austen, including her writing table, jewelry, letters, and the remarkable patchwork coverlet made by Jane, her sister Cassandra, and their mother.

Historic Florals, Jane Austen’s Letters & Handwritten Music

What makes Jane Austen at Home especially distinctive is the historical source material behind the designs. Riley Blake reproduced beautiful floral prints associated with Austen's history and created additional fabrics incorporating music handwritten by Jane Austen and passages from her personal correspondence.

The result is a fabric collection with a genuine connection to Austen's life—beautiful for quilters, readers, history lovers, and anyone drawn to traditional English textiles.

Jane Austen at Home and the Original Coverlet

One of the most treasured objects preserved at Jane Austen’s House is the patchwork coverlet made by Jane Austen, Cassandra Austen, and their mother. The original is a large medallion-style patchwork coverlet measuring approximately 91" × 105", with a central chintz diamond surrounded by 232 smaller diamonds and an outer border containing more than 2,500 tiny diamonds.

Jane Austen at Home was developed in connection with recreating this historic textile. Riley Blake even produced a special 52" × 85" border panel required for an accurate reproduction of the Austen coverlet.
