What Is a Jelly Roll?

A Jelly Roll is a precut fabric bundle made from coordinating 2½-inch-wide strips of fabric, typically cut across the width of the fabric. Many Jelly Rolls contain approximately 40 strips, although the exact number can vary by manufacturer and collection.

Because the strips are already cut to a consistent width, you can skip much of the cutting and get straight to sewing—one reason Jelly Rolls have become one of the most popular precut fabrics for quilters.

Jelly Rolls, Rolie Polies, Strip Rolls & More

Not every fabric manufacturer uses the name Jelly Roll. You may also see these popular 2½-inch fabric strips called Rolie Polies, Strip Rolls, Strip Pies, or other manufacturer-specific names.

Whatever they're called, the idea is essentially the same: a coordinated collection of precut fabric strips that makes choosing fabrics and beginning a project faster and easier.
