Yet knowing how to transform that artwork into a finished quilt can sometimes be the most challenging part.

At Shabby Fabrics, our collection of quilt panel patterns and books helps take the guesswork out of quilting with panels. Discover creative designs that show you how to frame a panel, add borders, incorporate patchwork blocks, and turn a favorite piece of fabric into a beautiful quilt, wall hanging, or handmade gift.

Whether you're working with a panel you've had in your fabric stash for years or searching for inspiration for a new project, these patterns and books offer wonderful possibilities.

What Can You Make With a Quilt Panel?

A fabric panel can become the centerpiece of an entire quilting project. Because the main artwork is already printed on the fabric, you can focus on the surrounding design, color combinations, and finishing details.

Depending on the size and style of your panel, you can create:

• Bed quilts and lap quilts featuring a central fabric panel

• Wall hangings that showcase beautiful artwork

• Baby quilts and nursery decorations

• Seasonal Christmas and Halloween quilts

• Winter and woodland-themed projects

• Decorative pillows and home accents

• Handmade gifts for family and friends

One of the most exciting aspects of quilting with panels is that the same fabric panel can look completely different depending on the pattern you choose.

A simple border can create an elegant wall hanging, while a more elaborate design with pieced blocks can transform the same panel into a full-sized quilt.

Quilt Panel Patterns With Beautiful Pieced Borders

Adding borders is one of the most popular ways to turn a fabric panel into a finished quilt.

Some quilt panel patterns use simple strips of coordinating fabric to frame the artwork, while others incorporate traditional quilt blocks, geometric designs, or multiple pieced borders.

Simple Borders for Quilt Panels

A simple border can be the perfect choice when you want the artwork to remain the focal point.

Select coordinating fabrics that complement the colors of the panel and use them to create a clean, balanced frame.

This approach is particularly appealing for detailed scenic panels, wildlife artwork, and inspirational designs.

Pieced Borders for Fabric Panels

If you enjoy patchwork, choose a panel quilt pattern that incorporates pieced borders.

Flying Geese, half-square triangles, stars, and other traditional quilt blocks can add beautiful movement and detail around a central fabric panel.

Pieced borders are also an excellent way to incorporate coordinating fabrics from the same collection.

Quilt Panel Patterns With Multiple Borders

Some panel quilt patterns combine narrow framing borders with larger pieced sections, creating a more elaborate finished quilt.

These designs can be especially effective when you want to increase the size of a smaller panel or create a substantial lap quilt.

Quilt Panel Books — Creative Ideas for Quilting With Panels

Quilt panel books offer inspiration for quilters who want to explore multiple ways of working with printed fabric panels.

Depending on the book, you may discover different border treatments, creative quilt layouts, panel-sizing techniques, and ideas for combining fabric panels with traditional patchwork.

Panel quilting books can be particularly helpful if you have several panels in your stash and want to experiment with different designs.

Some books focus on simple, approachable projects, while others explore more elaborate quilt constructions.

Christmas Quilt Panel Patterns

Christmas is one of the most popular occasions for creating quilts and wall hangings with fabric panels.

Beautiful holiday panels often feature Santa Claus, decorated Christmas trees, snowmen, reindeer, festive woodland animals, and traditional winter scenes.

A Christmas quilt panel pattern can help you transform one of these designs into a special decoration that can be enjoyed year after year.

Santa Claus Quilt Panels

Santa panels are wonderful for Christmas wall hangings, holiday quilts, and handmade gifts.

A quilt pattern with coordinating red, green, cream, or gold fabrics can beautifully complement traditional Santa artwork.

Snowman and Reindeer Panel Quilts

Snowmen and reindeer panels are charming choices for festive quilting projects.

Choose patterns that allow the artwork to remain prominent while adding coordinating seasonal fabrics and decorative borders.

Nativity and Christian Quilt Panels

Religious Christmas panels featuring the Nativity, the Holy Family, and the birth of Jesus can become meaningful quilts and wall hangings.

A carefully chosen panel quilt pattern can frame the artwork beautifully while preserving the peaceful, inspirational character of the design.

Wildlife, Woodland, and Scenic Panel Quilt Patterns

Wildlife and landscape fabric panels often feature detailed artwork that looks beautiful when framed in a quilt.

From owls and eagles to woodland animals, forests, and mountain scenery, these panels can become striking decorative projects.

Wildlife Quilt Panel Patterns

Choose a pattern that complements the subject and color palette of your wildlife panel.

A dramatic eagle or owl panel may look beautiful with a simple border that emphasizes the artwork, while a larger quilt design can incorporate pieced blocks and coordinating nature-inspired fabrics.

Woodland Quilt Panel Patterns

Woodland scenes featuring trees, forest animals, and peaceful natural settings are wonderful for rustic quilts, cabin décor, and seasonal wall hangings.

Look for coordinating fabrics with leaves, branches, textures, or subtle botanical designs.

Landscape and Scenic Quilt Panels

Scenic fabric panels featuring mountains, lakes, forests, and other landscapes can become beautiful quilts.

Consider patterns that frame the scene without overwhelming its details.

Baby Quilt Panel Patterns

Baby fabric panels are a wonderful starting point for sweet nursery quilts and handmade gifts.

Panels featuring animals, storybook characters, soft florals, and playful illustrations can be surrounded by coordinating fabrics to create a personalized baby quilt.

Panel quilt patterns are especially helpful when you want to create a memorable gift without piecing an elaborate central design.

Choose a pattern that matches your preferred finished size and review the panel dimensions before cutting.

Halloween and Autumn Quilt Panel Patterns

Seasonal fabric panels offer a fun way to decorate for fall and Halloween.

Halloween panels may feature pumpkins, playful ghosts, black cats, haunted houses, or whimsical seasonal artwork.

Autumn panels can include woodland animals, colorful foliage, harvest scenes, and other fall-inspired designs.

A panel quilt pattern can help turn these seasonal fabrics into decorative wall hangings, lap quilts, or gifts.

Winter Quilt Panel Patterns

Winter fabric panels are beautiful for projects that can remain on display long after Christmas.

Snow-covered landscapes, woodland animals, snowflakes, and peaceful winter scenes are especially appealing for seasonal wall hangings.

Choose coordinating fabrics that complement the panel's winter palette and create a cohesive finished design.

Butterfly and Floral Panel Quilt Patterns

Butterfly and floral panels are wonderful choices for spring quilts, garden-inspired wall hangings, and decorative home projects.

These panels often feature beautiful colors and intricate artwork that can be enhanced with simple framing borders or coordinated patchwork.

A thoughtfully selected quilt panel pattern allows the printed artwork to shine while introducing additional color and texture.

Advent Calendar Fabric Panel Projects

Advent calendar fabric panels are a special type of seasonal project.

Unlike traditional quilt panels, these fabrics may include printed pockets, numbers, or other components intended to be assembled into a calendar.

Choose instructions specifically designed for the type of Advent calendar panel you're using, since construction requirements can differ from those of a traditional quilt.

How to Choose the Right Quilt Panel Pattern

Finding the right pattern begins with understanding your fabric panel.

Measure Your Fabric Panel

Fabric panels come in many different dimensions. Some feature a single large image, while others contain several smaller printed designs.

Before purchasing a pattern, check the panel dimensions specified in the instructions and compare them with the usable printed area of your fabric.

Consider the Finished Quilt Size

Think about whether you want to create a wall hanging, baby quilt, lap quilt, or larger bed quilt.

A smaller panel can often become part of a larger quilt when surrounded by pieced blocks or additional borders, provided the pattern accommodates the dimensions.

Select Coordinating Fabrics

Look for fabrics that complement the colors and subject of your panel.

Small-scale prints, subtle textures, florals, plaids, and coordinating solids can help create visual balance.

Decide How Much Piecing You Want to Do

Some panel quilt patterns require only basic cutting and sewing, while others feature more elaborate patchwork.

Choose a design that matches your experience level and the amount of time you want to spend on the project.
