A Charm Pack is a bundle of precut 5" × 5" fabric squares, typically featuring coordinating fabrics from the same collection.

Instead of purchasing yardage from numerous prints and cutting every square yourself, a Charm Pack gives you a ready-to-sew assortment of fabrics that were designed to work together.

Many Charm Packs contain 42 five-inch squares, although the exact number of squares can vary by manufacturer and collection. Always check the individual product description for the exact piece count.

Charm Packs have become one of quilting's most popular precut formats because they're convenient, versatile, easy to sew with, and an affordable way to enjoy many fabrics from a collection in a single bundle.

Are Charm Packs and 5-Inch Squares the Same Thing?

Essentially, yes—but the terminology can be confusing.

Charm Pack is the familiar name many quilters use for bundles of 5" × 5" precut fabric squares, but different fabric manufacturers use different names for this same general precut format.

You may see:

  • Charm Pack – commonly associated with Moda Fabrics

  • 5" Stacker – Riley Blake Designs

  • 5 Karat Gems – Wilmington Prints

  • 5 Karat Crystals – Wilmington Prints

  • 5" Stamps – used by Island Batik and other manufacturers

  • 5" Squares – used by many fabric manufacturers

  • Charm Squares – another common description for 5-inch precut squares

So if a pattern calls for a Charm Pack, don't be surprised if the coordinating precut from another manufacturer has a completely different name.

The important measurements are the same: you're looking for 5" × 5" precut fabric squares.

Why Are They Called Charm Packs?

Moda Fabrics helped make the Charm Pack name familiar throughout the quilting world, and today the term is often used conversationally for 5-inch precut squares even when another manufacturer uses a different product name.

That's similar to the way quilters commonly use names such as Jelly Roll and Layer Cake when talking about particular precut sizes.

At Shabby Fabrics, you'll see the manufacturer's actual product terminology in individual product names while also finding these precuts together in our Charm Packs and 5-Inch Squares category.

That makes it easier to shop regardless of whether you came looking for a Charm Pack, Stacker, 5 Karat Gem, 5 Karat Crystal, Stamp, Charm Square, or simply a pack of 5-inch squares.

How Many Squares Are in a Charm Pack?

Many Charm Packs contain 42 squares measuring 5" × 5" each.

Forty-two is extremely common, and you'll see it throughout Shabby Fabrics' assortment from multiple manufacturers.

However, not every 5-inch precut bundle contains exactly 42 squares. Piece counts can vary according to the manufacturer and fabric collection.

Why?

A collection may contain a different number of individual prints, and some prints may be repeated within the bundle to create the manufacturer's intended assortment.

For that reason, always check the product description before calculating fabric requirements for a pattern.

What Size Is a Charm Pack Square?

A standard Charm Pack square measures:

5 inches × 5 inches before sewing.

Remember that quilting uses seam allowances, so the finished visible size will be smaller when a square is sewn directly into a project.

The consistent precut size is part of what makes Charm Packs so useful. Designers can create quilt and sewing patterns specifically around 5-inch squares, allowing makers to begin with accurately sized pieces instead of cutting every square individually from yardage.

Why Quilters Love Charm Packs

Charm Packs solve several quilting challenges at once.

First, the cutting has already been done. When a pattern uses full 5-inch squares, you can move directly into arranging and sewing rather than spending time cutting dozens of identical squares.

Second, the fabrics coordinate. A collection has already been designed around a cohesive palette, style, and theme, giving you variety without having to choose every individual print yourself.

Third, you get to sew with many fabrics from a collection without purchasing yardage of every print.

And finally, they're simply fun.

Open a Charm Pack and you can immediately begin sorting, arranging, mixing, matching, and imagining what those squares might become.

Charm Packs Make Precut Quilting Easy

One of the biggest advantages of precut quilting is that part of the preparation has already been done for you.

With 5-inch squares, you begin with consistently sized pieces that can be arranged in countless ways.

Keep the squares whole for incredibly approachable patchwork, or cut and combine them to create additional shapes and blocks.

Depending on the pattern, 5-inch squares can become four-patches, nine-patches, half-square triangles, disappearing blocks, borders, accents, scrappy layouts, and many other quilt designs.

That versatility makes Charm Packs useful to both beginning and experienced quilters.

Are Charm Packs Good for Beginners?

Yes. Charm Packs can be an excellent precut for beginning quilters.

One of the first challenges new quilters encounter is learning to coordinate fabrics and accurately cut multiple pieces.

A Charm Pack can simplify both.

The collection already coordinates, and the squares have already been cut to a consistent 5-inch size.

A beginner can choose a straightforward Charm Pack pattern and focus on learning essential skills such as maintaining an accurate seam allowance, chain piecing, pressing, matching seams, assembling rows, and constructing a quilt top.

And because experienced quilters can cut, combine, and manipulate 5-inch squares in sophisticated ways, Charm Packs are certainly not limited to beginner projects.

What Can I Make with a Charm Pack?

Five-inch squares can become an extraordinary variety of projects.

Use Charm Packs for:

  • Quilts and throw quilts

  • Baby quilts

  • Table runners

  • Table toppers

  • Wall hangings

  • Pillows

  • Placemats

  • Bags and totes

  • Aprons

  • Mini quilts

  • Seasonal projects

  • Patchwork gifts

  • Home décor

  • Four-patch and nine-patch designs

  • Half-square triangle projects

  • Scrappy quilts

  • Precut-friendly patterns

Sometimes the simplest project is also one of the prettiest: arrange beautiful 5-inch squares from a coordinated collection, sew them together, and let the fabric do the work.

Charm Pack Quilt Patterns

Have the fabric but need the project?

Shabby Fabrics has an entire collection of Charm Pack Quilt Patterns created specifically for 5-inch precut squares.

These patterns include quilts, table runners, wall hangings, pillows, bags, aprons, seasonal projects, mini quilts, and more.

A Charm Pack-friendly pattern is particularly helpful because the designer has already planned the project around the precut format.

Depending on the design, you may need one Charm Pack, multiple Charm Packs, or additional yardage for backgrounds, borders, binding, or backing, so always review the pattern requirements before purchasing your fabric.

Free Charm Pack Projects & Video Tutorials

Looking for something fun to make with your 5-inch squares? Shabby Fabrics also offers free Charm Pack-friendly projects with step-by-step video tutorials and free downloadable patterns.

Make our Charming Coaster, a creative project designed to make beautiful use of 5" precut squares, or try the Charming Hourglass Coaster to learn another way to transform Charm Pack squares into a useful handmade project.

Both projects include free video tutorials and free pattern downloads, so you can follow along as you sew.

For even more inspiration, explore our Precut Quilt Projects & DIY Fabric Crafts for creative ways to use Charm Packs and other popular precut fabrics.

Moda Charm Packs

Moda Fabrics is closely associated with the Charm Pack name and helped establish coordinated precut fabric bundles as an important part of modern quilting.

A Moda Charm Pack typically gives you 5-inch squares from a coordinated Moda collection, making it easy to experience prints from favorite Moda designers without purchasing yardage of every fabric.

Shabby Fabrics carries Charm Packs from many Moda designers and collections, along with popular basics such as Bella Solids.

Explore more Moda Fabrics to coordinate your Charm Pack with yardage, backgrounds, borders, bindings, and other fabrics.

Riley Blake Designs 5" Stackers

Riley Blake Designs commonly calls its 5-inch precut bundles 5" Stackers.

The name is different, but the concept is familiar: coordinated 5" × 5" fabric squares conveniently bundled together for quilting and sewing.

So when you see a Riley Blake 5" Stacker at Shabby Fabrics, think of it as Riley Blake's version of the 5-inch precut format many quilters associate with Charm Packs.

Wilmington Prints 5 Karat Gems & 5 Karat Crystals

Wilmington Prints uses distinctive names for many of its 5-inch precut bundles, including both 5 Karat Gems and 5 Karat Crystals.

Both names appear in Shabby Fabrics' assortment of Wilmington Prints 5" × 5" precuts.

Rather than treating one term as correct and the other as an error, look at the exact product name assigned to that particular Wilmington collection.

Whether the package says 5 Karat Gems or 5 Karat Crystals, you'll find these coordinated 5-inch precuts alongside other Charm Pack-style bundles at Shabby Fabrics.

Island Batik 5" Stamps

Island Batik uses the creative term 5" Stamps for its 5-inch precut format.

These bundles bring the convenience of precut squares to the rich color, movement, and distinctive appearance of batik fabrics.

If you're searching for batik Charm Packs, remember that the manufacturer's terminology may be 5" Stamps instead.

Shop 5-Inch Squares by Fabric Collection

One of the best things about buying a Charm Pack is experiencing a coordinated fabric collection all at once.

Instead of choosing one or two favorite prints, you can often enjoy an assortment representing the collection's broader palette and design story.

That makes 5-inch squares particularly useful when you want a quilt to have variety while still looking intentionally coordinated.

If you fall in love with the collection, you can then look for coordinating yardage for backgrounds, borders, binding, backing, or additional blocks.

Explore Fabrics by Collection to discover even more coordinating fabrics.

Charm Packs vs. Mini Charm Packs

The biggest difference is size.

Charm Pack squares measure 5" × 5".

Mini Charm Packs contain much smaller 2½" × 2½" squares.

Mini Charms are wonderful for small patchwork, accents, miniature projects, detailed piecing, and an especially affordable taste of a fabric collection.

Charm Packs provide four times the surface area of a 2½-inch Mini Charm square, giving you more flexibility for larger blocks and projects.

Both are convenient ways to sew with coordinated precut fabric without starting with yardage.

Charm Packs vs. Layer Cakes

Both are square precuts, but the size is very different.

Charm Packs contain 5" × 5" squares, while Layer Cakes contain 10" × 10" squares.

A 10-inch square has four times the area of a 5-inch square, giving Layer Cakes considerably more fabric per piece.

Which one should you choose?

Let the pattern guide you. Many quilt patterns are specifically designed around one precut size so you can take advantage of standardized pieces and reduce fabric preparation.

Charm Packs vs. Jelly Rolls

Charm Packs give you 5-inch squares, while Jelly Rolls are made from long 2½-inch strips, generally cut across the width of the fabric.

The formats lend themselves to very different construction possibilities.

Charm Packs are wonderful for square-based patchwork and blocks built from 5-inch pieces. Jelly Rolls excel in strip piecing, strip-based blocks, borders, bindings, and patterns specifically designed around 2½-inch strips.

Many quilters love both because each precut format provides a different way to enjoy a coordinated fabric collection.

Build a Precut Fabric Stash

Charm Packs are also a wonderful addition to a quilting fabric stash.

They're compact, coordinated, easy to store, and provide a broad assortment of prints without requiring a large amount of yardage.

Use them as the foundation for a future quilt, combine compatible packs, mix them with solids and backgrounds, or keep favorite collections available for smaller projects and accents.

Explore our complete assortment of Precut Fabrics, including Charm Packs, Mini Charm Packs, Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, Fat Quarter Bundles, Fat Eighth Bundles, and other convenient fabric formats.

Why Buy Charm Packs from Shabby Fabrics?

Shabby Fabrics offers an extensive selection of Charm Packs and 5-inch precut squares from many of quilting's leading fabric manufacturers and designers.

More importantly, we understand how quilters actually use them.

A precut isn't simply a stack of fabric. It's the beginning of a project.

That's why we bring together the 5-inch precuts themselves with coordinating fabric collections, backgrounds, patterns, kits, notions, and an extensive selection of Charm Pack Quilt Patterns specifically designed to help turn those beautiful little squares into something you'll love.

Whether you call them Charm Packs, Charm Squares, 5" Stackers, 5 Karat Gems, 5 Karat Crystals, 5" Stamps, or simply 5-inch squares, Shabby Fabrics makes it easy to find a coordinated precut bundle and start imagining what it can become.

Frequently Asked Questions About Charm Packs

What is a Charm Pack in quilting?

A Charm Pack is a precut fabric bundle containing coordinated 5" × 5" squares, usually from the same fabric collection. It gives quilters a variety of coordinating fabrics without requiring them to cut every square from yardage.

What size are Charm Pack squares?

Charm Pack squares measure 5 inches × 5 inches before sewing.

How many squares are in a Charm Pack?

Many Charm Packs contain 42 five-inch squares, but the exact number can vary by manufacturer and collection. Always check the individual product description for the actual piece count.

Is a Charm Pack the same as 5-inch squares?

Charm Packs contain 5-inch squares. Different manufacturers use different names for similar 5" × 5" precut bundles, so you may also see them called 5" Squares, 5" Stackers, 5 Karat Gems, 5 Karat Crystals, 5" Stamps, or Charm Squares.

What does Moda call its 5-inch squares?

Moda Fabrics commonly calls its bundles of coordinated 5-inch squares Charm Packs.

What does Riley Blake call its 5-inch squares?

Riley Blake Designs commonly calls its 5-inch precut bundles 5" Stackers.

What does Wilmington Prints call its 5-inch squares?

Wilmington Prints uses names including 5 Karat Gems and 5 Karat Crystals for 5-inch precut bundles. Use the specific manufacturer's product name shown for the individual collection.

What does Island Batik call its 5-inch squares?

What can I make with one Charm Pack?

The answer depends on the number of squares in the pack and the project, but Charm Packs can be used for small quilts, baby quilts, table runners, wall hangings, pillows, bags, placemats, mini quilts, patchwork projects, and many other sewing projects. Some larger projects require multiple Charm Packs or additional yardage.

Are Charm Packs good for beginner quilters?

Yes. Charm Packs can be particularly beginner-friendly because the fabrics already coordinate and the squares are already cut to a consistent size. Choosing a pattern specifically designed for Charm Packs can simplify the process even further.

Do I need to prewash Charm Packs?

Prewashing individual 5-inch precut squares is generally not recommended because the small pieces can fray, distort, and shrink unevenly during washing. Follow the care recommendations for your fabric and project.

Can I make half-square triangles with Charm Packs?

Yes. Five-inch squares can be used to make half-square triangles and many other patchwork units. The resulting size depends on the construction method and seam allowances used in your pattern.

Are all the fabrics in a Charm Pack different?

Not necessarily. A Charm Pack represents a coordinated collection, but depending on the number of prints in the collection and the number of pieces in the pack, some fabrics may be repeated.

What is the difference between a Charm Pack and a Mini Charm Pack?

A Charm Pack contains 5" × 5" squares, while a Mini Charm Pack contains 2½" × 2½" squares. Both provide coordinated precut fabrics, but Mini Charms are one-quarter the area of a 5-inch Charm square.

What is the difference between a Charm Pack and a Layer Cake?

Charm Packs contain 5-inch squares, while Layer Cakes contain 10-inch squares. A 10-inch Layer Cake square has four times the surface area of a 5-inch Charm square.

What is the difference between a Charm Pack and a Jelly Roll?

Charm Packs are bundles of 5" × 5" squares. Jelly Rolls are bundles of long 2½-inch-wide strips, generally cut across the width of fabric. Quilt patterns are often designed specifically around one of these standardized precut formats.

Are there quilt patterns specifically designed for Charm Packs?

Yes. Shabby Fabrics has a dedicated collection of Charm Pack Quilt Patterns designed around 5-inch precut squares, including quilts, table runners, wall hangings, pillows, bags, seasonal projects, and more.
