Bias Tape & Binding for Sewing and Quilting

What Is Bias Tape?

Bias tape is a strip of fabric cut diagonally across the grain, typically at a 45-degree angle, and prepared for use as an edge finish or decorative detail. The diagonal cut gives it flexibility to follow curves more readily than straight-grain strips. Depending on the product, the tape may have pressed folds or an adhesive backing.

Choose bias tape according to its intended use. Tape for enclosing a raw edge and narrow iron-on tape for outlining a design serve different purposes.

Double-Fold Bias Tape for Edge Finishes

Double-fold bias tape has its long raw edges folded inward and is folded again lengthwise. It can wrap around a project’s edge, enclosing the raw fabric edges inside the tape. Use the width specified by your pattern and check that it accommodates the thickness of the materials you are finishing.

Explore colors that blend with your fabric for a subtle finish or contrast with it for a defined outline. Ready-made tape saves the preparation involved in cutting and pressing your own strips.

Iron-On Quilting Bias for Decorative Details

Narrow iron-on quilting bias tape can create lines, borders, stems, and outlined motifs on a fabric surface. It is useful for designs that call for decorative bias work, including stained-glass-style appliqué.

Follow the manufacturer’s directions for pressing temperature, application time, and any required stitching. An adhesive backing does not automatically mean the tape can be left unstitched on every project. Choose the Right Width, Fold, and Length

Before ordering, check whether your project needs double-fold tape, decorative iron-on bias, or another binding method. Read the product description carefully: widths may describe the folded tape rather than the unfolded fabric strip.

Measure the edges or decorative lines you need to cover, then allow additional length for joins, corners, and finishing the ends. Package lengths vary, so compare the amount included with your pattern’s requirements.

For curved edges, guide the tape gently rather than pulling it taut. Excess stretching can distort the tape or cause the finished edge to ripple.

Bias Tape and Quilt Binding Are Different Choices

Bias tape is one option for finishing edges, but it is not required for every quilt. Straight-edged quilts commonly use binding cut on the straight grain, while rounded or scalloped edges often benefit from bias-cut binding.

Also, packaged double-fold bias tape and quilt binding made from a fabric strip folded in half have different fold arrangements. Follow your pattern’s construction method rather than assuming they can be substituted without adjustments.

Binding Tools and Project Inspiration

Binding holders and spools help keep prepared strips organized while you work. A binding miter tool can assist with the corner-finishing method it was designed for; follow its instructions and confirm that it suits your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is bias tape used for?

Bias tape can finish raw edges or create decorative details. Its flexibility makes it useful around curves. The appropriate application depends on the tape’s width, folds, material, and attachment method.

What is double-fold bias tape?

Double-fold bias tape has both long raw edges folded inward, followed by another fold lengthwise. This arrangement allows it to wrap around and enclose a project’s raw edge.

Is iron-on quilting bias tape the same as double-fold bias tape?

No. Narrow iron-on quilting bias is commonly used for decorative lines on a fabric surface. Double-fold bias tape is commonly used to enclose edges. Check the product description and your pattern before choosing.

Does iron-on bias tape need stitching?

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your pattern. Some applications require stitching for a secure finish, especially when the project will be handled or washed.

Can I use bias tape to bind a quilt?

You can use suitable bias binding when the width, material, and construction method match the quilt’s requirements. Do not assume every packaged bias tape is appropriate for every quilt.

Do straight-edged quilts require bias binding?

No. Straight-grain binding is commonly used on straight-edged quilts. Bias-cut binding offers additional flexibility for rounded or scalloped edges.

How much bias tape should I buy?

Measure the total length of the edges or decorative lines you will cover, then add the allowance required for joins, corners, and finishing. Check the length included in each package.

How do I choose a bias tape color?

Choose a coordinating color for a subtle edge or a contrasting color to highlight the shape of your project. For decorative appliqué, select colors that support the motif, such as green for stems or dark tape for defined outlines.
