Jelly Rolls & 2.5-Inch Precut Fabric Strips

What Is a Jelly Roll?

A Jelly Roll is a bundle of coordinated 2½-inch-wide fabric strips, typically cut across the full width of fabric.

Each strip generally measures approximately:

2½" × 42–44"

The strips are stacked together and rolled into a compact bundle—which helps explain the wonderfully memorable name.

Moda Fabrics popularized the Jelly Roll name, and it has become so widely recognized among quilters that “Jelly Roll” is often used conversationally to describe the entire category of 2½-inch precut fabric strips.

Other fabric manufacturers have their own names for the same basic precut format, which we'll explain below.

How Many Strips Are in a Jelly Roll?

A typical Jelly Roll contains approximately 40 strips, although the exact number varies by manufacturer and fabric collection.

Fabric collections don't always contain exactly 40 individual prints.

When a collection has fewer designs than the number of strips needed for the bundle, selected fabrics may appear more than once.

Other collections and manufacturers may package different quantities altogether.

For that reason, always check the individual product description for the exact number of strips included.

What Size Is a Jelly Roll Strip?

A standard Jelly Roll strip is approximately:

2½" wide × width of fabric

For typical quilting cotton, that means approximately:

2½" × 42–44"

The actual usable width can vary slightly by manufacturer and selvage width.

The long, narrow shape is what makes this precut so different from Charm Packs, Layer Cakes, Fat Quarters, and Fat Eighths.

Why Do Quilters Love Jelly Rolls?

There is something uniquely useful about having a collection already cut into long 2½-inch strips.

Jelly Rolls make it possible to incorporate many different fabrics and color changes within a relatively short distance across a quilt.

Instead of cutting dozens of strips from individual pieces of yardage, the strips are already prepared and coordinated.

That makes them wonderful for:

  • Strip piecing

  • Patchwork quilts

  • Log Cabin-style designs

  • Rail Fence-style designs

  • Borders and accents

  • Table runners

  • Placemats

  • Bags

  • Pillows

  • Home décor

  • Jelly Roll rugs

  • Scrappy-looking quilts with a coordinated palette

The result can look wonderfully complex and colorful even when the construction is surprisingly approachable.

Why Are They Called Jelly Rolls?

The name comes from the way the fabric strips are packaged.

The long strips are layered together and rolled into a spiral bundle that resembles a rolled pastry.

Jelly Roll is the terminology associated with Moda Fabrics, but the popularity of the format has made the phrase widely recognizable among quilters.

You'll also encounter many other names for 2½-inch strip precuts.

Jelly Rolls Have Different Names Depending on the Manufacturer

This is where shopping for 2½-inch precut strips can become confusing.

Different manufacturers use different names for essentially the same fundamental precut format.

You may encounter:

  • Moda Fabrics – Jelly Rolls

  • Riley Blake Designs – Rolie Polies

  • Benartex – Strip-pies

  • Hoffman Fabrics – Bali Pops

  • FreeSpirit Fabrics – Design Rolls

  • Dear Stella – Strip Packs

  • Moda UK – Strip Rolls

  • Wilmington Prints – 40 Karat Gems or 40 Karat Crystals

  • QT Fabrics – 2.5" Strips

  • Timeless Treasures – 2.5" Strips

  • P&B Textiles – 2.5" Strips

  • Marcus Fabrics – 2.5" Strips

Names, strip counts, and exact specifications can vary by manufacturer and collection, so check the individual product description when selecting your precut.

Whether the package says Jelly Roll, Rolie Polie, Bali Pop, Design Roll, Strip Pack, Strip Roll, or simply 2.5" Strips, the important characteristic is the long, narrow precut strip format.

What Is a Bali Pop?

A Bali Pop is Hoffman's name for a coordinated collection of 2½-inch precut strips featuring its beautiful Bali Batik fabrics.

Like other 2½-inch strip precuts, Bali Pops eliminate the need to cut all those individual strips yourself while providing a coordinated assortment of colors and batik designs.

They're particularly beautiful in projects where numerous colors and textures flow throughout the quilt.

What Is a Riley Blake Rolie Polie?

Rolie Polie is Riley Blake Designs' name for its precut strip bundles.

Like a Jelly Roll, the strips are approximately 2½ inches wide × width of fabric and coordinate around a fabric collection.

So if a quilt pattern calls for a Jelly Roll and you're looking at a Riley Blake Rolie Polie, you're looking at the same basic precut format—although you should always verify the number of strips required by your pattern against the number included in the bundle.

What Can You Make with a Jelly Roll?

The better question may be: What can't you make with one?

Jelly Rolls can be transformed into quilts, table runners, placemats, pillows, bags, rugs, wall hangings, and countless other sewing projects.

Because each strip runs approximately the width of fabric, you can use them as long strips or subcut them into smaller rectangles, squares, triangles, and other patchwork units.

That flexibility has helped make Jelly Rolls one of the classic precuts in modern quilting.

Jelly Roll-Friendly Quilt Patterns

Have a Jelly Roll and need the perfect quilt?

Explore Shabby Fabrics' collection of Jelly Roll Friendly Quilt Patterns.

These patterns are specifically designed to make creative use of 2½-inch precut strips.

Depending on the pattern, you may use one or more Jelly Rolls along with coordinating background, border, binding, or backing fabric.

Using a Jelly Roll-friendly pattern takes much of the guesswork out of determining how many strips you'll need and how to make the best use of your precut.

Free Jelly Roll Projects, Patterns & Video Tutorials

Already have a Jelly Roll waiting in your sewing room?

Shabby Fabrics has an extensive collection of Jelly Roll Friendly Projects featuring free step-by-step video tutorials, with many projects also offering free downloadable patterns.

You can also explore our Jelly Roll Projects for even more ideas and inspiration using 2½-inch strips.

Our tutorials help take you beyond simply buying the fabric. Follow along with us as we demonstrate cutting, piecing, construction, and helpful techniques for turning your Jelly Roll into something you'll be excited to use, display, or give.

Jelly Roll Rugs

One of the most memorable crazes involving these precuts has been the Jelly Roll Rug.

Quilters discovered that those colorful 2½-inch strips could be transformed into beautiful fabric rugs, and Jelly Roll rugs became enormously popular.

The format is particularly well suited to rugs because the long strips allow colors and prints to continually change as the project grows.

Jelly Roll Rug patterns remain popular with quilters who want a project that puts an entire collection of coordinating strips on display in a completely different way from a traditional quilt.

Are Jelly Rolls Good for Beginning Quilters?

Yes.

Jelly Rolls can be particularly approachable because one major cutting step has already been completed for you: the fabrics have been accurately cut into long 2½-inch strips.

Beginning quilters can focus on skills such as:

  • Accurate seam allowances

  • Strip piecing

  • Pressing

  • Subcutting strip sets

  • Matching seams

  • Quilt block construction

Pairing the precut with a Jelly Roll Friendly Quilt Pattern or one of Shabby Fabrics' free Jelly Roll video tutorials can make getting started even easier.

Jelly Rolls for Strip Piecing

Jelly Rolls and strip piecing are natural partners.

Instead of cutting numerous 2½-inch strips from yardage, the strips are ready to sew.

They can be joined into strip sets and then subcut, sewn end to end, arranged by color, combined into blocks, or incorporated into countless other patchwork techniques.

Because a bundle can contain dozens of coordinated strips, you can achieve frequent color changes and tremendous visual variety without selecting and cutting dozens of individual fabrics yourself.

Jelly Rolls vs. Honey Buns

Both are long precut fabric strips, but the widths are different.

A Honey Bun strip is approximately:

1½" × width of fabric

A Jelly Roll strip is approximately:

2½" × width of fabric

That extra inch makes an enormous difference in versatility.

Jelly Rolls are supported by a much larger variety of quilt patterns and projects, while Honey Buns are a more specialized narrow-strip precut.

Jelly Rolls vs. Charm Packs

Charm Packs contain approximately 5" × 5" squares.

Jelly Rolls contain approximately 2½" × width-of-fabric strips.

Charm Packs are perfect for projects based around squares.

Jelly Rolls shine in strip piecing and patterns designed around long 2½-inch strips.

Both give you the opportunity to work with a coordinated fabric collection without purchasing yardage of every print.

Jelly Rolls vs. Layer Cakes

Layer Cakes contain approximately 10" × 10" squares.

Jelly Rolls contain approximately 2½"-wide strips.

Layer Cakes give you large squares that can be left whole or subcut into many shapes.

Jelly Rolls give you long strips that are ready for strip piecing, narrow patchwork units, and designs built around 2½-inch cuts.

Jelly Rolls vs. Fat Quarter Bundles

Fat Quarter Bundles contain pieces measuring approximately 18" × 21".

Jelly Rolls contain long 2½"-wide strips.

Fat Quarters give you greater freedom to determine the sizes and shapes you want to cut.

Jelly Rolls save substantial cutting time when your pattern already requires 2½-inch strips.

Choose the format that best matches the construction of your project.

Are Jelly Rolls Always 40 Strips?

No.

Although approximately 40 strips is common, strip counts vary by manufacturer and collection.

A collection may contain fewer individual fabric designs than the total number of strips in the bundle, so some prints may be repeated.

Other bundles may contain more or fewer strips.

Always check the product description rather than assuming every Jelly Roll-style precut contains exactly 40 pieces.

Explore Jelly Rolls at Shabby Fabrics

Shabby Fabrics carries a broad assortment of Jelly Rolls and other 2½-inch precut fabric strips from favorite quilting manufacturers and designers.

Whether the manufacturer calls them Jelly Rolls, Rolie Polies, Strip-pies, Bali Pops, Design Rolls, Strip Packs, Strip Rolls, 40 Karat Gems, 40 Karat Crystals, or simply 2.5" Strips, they all give quilters a convenient way to bring coordinated color and print variety into a project.

And when you need inspiration, Shabby Fabrics goes beyond selling the precut with Jelly Roll Friendly Quilt Patterns, free Jelly Roll-friendly video tutorials, and additional Jelly Roll Projects to help turn those beautiful strips into your next finished project.
